If you've spent any time in crypto, you've probably heard people talk about "earning yield." It sounds like something from a finance textbook, but the concept is actually straightforward and it's one of the most compelling reasons people get into DeFi.

Yield, Simply Explained

Yield is the return you earn on your crypto holdings over time. Think of it like interest on a savings account, except instead of a bank paying you 0.5% per year, DeFi protocols can offer significantly higher rates because they cut out the middlemen.

When you deposit your crypto into a DeFi protocol, you're providing a service whether that's lending your tokens to borrowers, providing liquidity for traders, or securing a network. In return, the protocol pays you a reward, usually expressed as an Annual Percentage Yield (APY).

How is Yield Generated?

Unlike traditional finance where yields come from central bank rates, DeFi yields come from actual economic activity on-chain:

Lending — You deposit tokens into a lending pool. Borrowers pay interest to use them. You earn a share of that interest.
Liquidity provision — You deposit token pairs into a decentralized exchange. Traders pay fees when they swap, and you earn a portion of those fees.
Staking — You lock up tokens to help validate transactions on a blockchain network. The network rewards you with newly minted tokens.
Yield farming — You move assets between different protocols to chase the highest returns, often earning governance tokens as bonus rewards.

Why Are DeFi Yields Higher Than Banks?

Traditional banks take a large cut of the interest earned on loans and deposits. DeFi removes the bank from the equation. The protocol connects lenders and borrowers directly, and the smart contract handles everything automatically. With fewer intermediaries, more of the return goes to you.

However, higher yields also come with higher risks. Smart contract bugs, impermanent loss, and market volatility can all affect your returns. It's essential to understand what you're getting into before committing funds.

Key Terms to Know

Term	What It Means
APY	Annual Percentage Yield: the total return you'd earn in a year, including compounding
APR	Annual Percentage Rate: similar to APY but without compounding
TVL	Total Value Locked: how much money is deposited in a protocol (higher = generally more trusted)
Impermanent Loss	A temporary loss that occurs when you provide liquidity and token prices change
Governance Token	A token that gives you voting rights in a protocol's decisions, often earned as a yield reward

Is Yield Right for You?

Earning yield can be a great way to put idle crypto to work instead of letting it sit in your wallet. But it's not a guaranteed profit machine. Start small, stick to well-established protocols, and never invest more than you can afford to lose.

As you get more comfortable, you can explore different strategies and platforms to optimise your returns, which is exactly what the next articles in this series cover.
