Infographics summarizing ways to make money in crypto Getting started in crypto doesn’t just mean buying Bitcoin and hoping the price goes up. There are multiple ways to earn — even in a bear market — as long as you understand the tools, risks, and strategies involved. In this guide, we’ll walk through a few popular methods that beginners can use to generate income with crypto, along with what you need to watch out for.

Whether you’re just starting to explore or already own a few tokens, these are some of the most common ways to earn in crypto today.

Spot Trading (Buy Low, Sell High)

This is the most basic form of making money in crypto: buying a coin at one price and selling it when the price goes up.

How it works:

You buy tokens (like ETH or SOL) on a centralized exchange (CEX) or a decentralized exchange (DEX).
You hold them in a wallet or leave them on the platform.
You sell them later when the price increases.

What to watch out for:

Volatility: Prices can swing dramatically in short periods.
FOMO/Panic: Emotional trading often leads to losses. Plan your entries and exits.

Trusted platforms:

ETH network: Coinbase, Binance, Uniswap
SOL network: Jupiter, Orca

Leverage Trading (Advanced – Use With Caution)

Some DEXs allow users to trade with leverage, meaning you can borrow funds to open larger positions than your actual balance.

How it works:

You choose a leverage level (e.g. 3x).
If your trade moves in the right direction, profits are multiplied.
If it moves the wrong way, losses are magnified and you can get liquidated.

What to watch out for:

High risk: You can lose more than you started with.
Not for beginners: Only use leverage if you understand how it works.

Platforms that support it:

ETH: GMX (Arbitrum), dYdX
SOL: Drift Protocol, Zeta Markets

Yield Farming (Put Your Tokens to Work)

Yield farming is when you provide liquidity to a DeFi protocol and earn rewards (usually in the form of tokens or interest).

How it works:

You deposit a pair of tokens into a liquidity pool (e.g. SOL/USDC).
You earn a portion of trading fees and/or additional rewards.

What to watch out for:

Impermanent Loss: If the price of one token in the pair changes a lot, you could lose value.
Protocol Risk: Smart contract bugs or rug pulls can wipe out funds.

Good platforms to explore:

ETH: Curve, Balancer, Aura
SOL: Kamino, Orca

Staking & Lending (Passive Income Options)

You can also earn by staking your tokens (helping to secure the network) or lending them to other users through DeFi platforms.

How it works:

Staking: You lock your tokens into a blockchain protocol and earn rewards.
Lending: You lend your tokens out via DeFi and earn interest.

What to watch out for:

Lockup Periods: Some staking options don’t let you withdraw immediately.
Smart Contract Risk: Lending platforms can be targets for hacks.

Beginner-friendly options:

ETH: Lido, Rocket Pool, Aave
SOL: Marinade, Solend, MarginFi

General Tips to Stay Safe

No matter how you choose to earn in crypto, keeping your assets safe should be a top priority:

Use a hardware wallet for long-term storage.
Never share your seed phrase.
Double-check URLs to avoid phishing sites. Refer to our Directory for validated links.
Start small while you’re learning. Don’t invest more than you’re willing to lose.
Diversify your strategies — don’t go all in on one protocol or coin.

Final Thoughts

Crypto opens up a wide range of ways to grow your capital — from simple buy-and-sell trades to more advanced strategies like yield farming or staking. Each method comes with its own risks and rewards, but with the right knowledge and precautions, even beginners can start earning.

The key is to start small, stay informed, and always prioritize security. As you gain confidence, you’ll discover which strategies fit your risk tolerance and financial goals best.
