Spot Trading and Perpetuals: The Basics

To start, yes—buying and selling spot crypto is still the most used function. This is simply purchasing a cryptocurrency at its current market price.

Some crypto trading platforms also offer perpetual contracts (perps), which let users speculate on price movements with leverage—without owning the asset. It’s advanced and risky, but widely available for experienced users.

Popular exchanges that support these:

Binance: Spot and perps with up to 125x leverage
Bybit: Strong derivatives platform with low-latency tools
OKX: User-friendly interface for spot and futures

Staking: Earn Passive Income on Your Tokens

Some crypto exchanges allow staking, where you lock your assets and earn rewards—similar to earning interest.

Binance and Kraken support flexible and locked staking options.
Coinbase offers Ethereum staking with transparent rewards.

This is an easy way to earn passive income from crypto while holding your tokens.

Lending and Borrowing: Crypto Finance Features

Many exchanges now offer crypto lending and borrowing services, allowing users to earn interest or access liquidity without selling assets.

Binance and KuCoin offer lending programs with daily payouts.
Bitfinex has peer-to-peer lending for margin traders.
OKX and Bybit support collateralized loans directly on platform.

These are useful tools for managing crypto portfolios more flexibly.

Launchpads: Early Access to New Crypto Projects

Through launchpads or launchpools, users can gain early access to new crypto tokens before they’re listed.

Binance Launchpad: Premier platform for early-stage tokens.
Bybit Launchpad: Offers rewards for users staking tokens.
KuCoin Spotlight: Focuses on emerging projects.

Launchpads let users participate in new projects, often in return for staking or holding native exchange tokens like BNB or KCS.

Auto-Invest and Recurring Buys

If you’re investing long-term, exchanges now offer auto-invest plans to automate purchases.

Coinbase and Gemini: Easy tools for recurring purchases.
Binance Auto-Invest: Supports portfolios and token baskets.

Perfect for users who believe in dollar-cost averaging and want to “set it and forget it.”

Copy Trading and Bots for Passive Traders

With copy trading and automated bots, some crypto platforms let you mirror the trades of pro users or run automated strategies.

Bybit and Bitget: Social trading with leaderboards.
Pionex: Built-in grid and DCA bots for automated execution.

This is great for beginners who want to participate without manually trading.

NFT Marketplaces and Web3 Tools

Crypto exchanges are becoming entry points to Web3, offering NFT marketplaces and wallet support.

Binance NFT and OKX NFT: Trade, mint, and collect NFTs without leaving the exchange.
KuCoin Wallet: Explore dApps while staying connected to your KuCoin account.

These platforms help users explore beyond traditional crypto investment.

Institutional-Grade Services

Larger users and companies can access professional services like:

API integrations for algo trading
OTC trading desks for large orders
Secure custody solutions
Proof-of-reserves dashboards for transparency

Exchanges like Coinbase Prime, Binance Institutional, and Kraken Pro offer robust infrastructure for institutional investors.
